IAPD Recognizes Members with Awards for Environmental Excellence and Impact

Overland Park, Kans. - IAPD - The Performance Plastics Association, is pleased to recognize its members who have demonstrated outstanding success with environmental and sustainability programs. The announcement was made Wednesday, September 14, 2022, during the opening general session of the 66th Annual IAPD Convention and connecX in Tampa, FL, USA.

Environmental Excellence Award
The IAPD Environmental Committee established the IAPD Environmental Excellence Award to celebrate the innovative or exemplary environmental responsibility by a member company. The award criteria recognize the IAPD members who have adopted practices in their operations that demonstrate new and creative initiatives. The IAPD Environmental Excellence Award recipients are as follows:

Curbell Plastics, Inc. received the top award for an IAPD distributor member. A pioneer in sustainability initiatives, Curbell Plastics, Inc. continues to grow and expand its program, as well as make valuable contributions to the association via environmental educational programming.

Mitsubishi Chemical Group – Engineered Shapes & Solutions received the top award for an IAPD manufacturer member. The company announced bold goals related to reducing its greenhouse gas emissions and recently acquired recycling companies to ensure that materials continue to be reused.

These companies earned between 150 and 174 points on their application and received certificates announcing their Silver Award status:

  • 3A Composites USA, Inc.
  • Cope Plastics, Inc.
  • Interstate Plastics
  • Piedmont Plastics
  • Vycom
These companies earned between 125 and 149 points on their application and received certificates announcing their Bronze Award status:
  • Cast Nylon Ltd.
  • Finger Lakes Extrusion Corporation
Environmental Impact Award
The Environmental Impact Award recognizes a branch location or facility that has taken extraordinary measures to demonstrate environmental sustainability. The 2022 Environmental Impact Award recipient is Curbell Plastics, Inc. – Virginia. This branch created a customized recycling solution for plastic waste previously deemed unrecyclable. An investment in a baler was paid off after the second pickup from the recycler, and at the time of the application deadline in July, 69,000 pounds of material had been recycled instead of taken to a landfill.

Curbell Plastics, Inc. sees this experience as a framework to design custom solutions for other large-scale plastic buyers who produce a significant amount of plastic scrap. “Now I’m thinking about other customers with a lot of waste and saying ‘Can we take this idea and create something that will work for them?’” said Business Manager Dan Kane, “It was a great project because there is opportunity across the country for customers who need this type of support.”

IAPD congratulates all award recipients and encourages all members, as well as all performance plastics companies, to learn more about the environmental sustainability of performance plastics at www.iapd.org.
